PUPPY CLASS ~ AKC S.T.A.R.
Our AKC STAR puppy class is a 6-week class for dogs 8-18 weeks old. Our trainer helps each student to learn new skills such as sit, down, come, leave it and loose leash walking as well as help solve common puppy problems like biting, chewing, housetraining, jumping, crate training, as well as anything else you need help with! Our trainers are highly experienced in puppy development and cognition and continue to further their education to provide you the best possible support. Our classes include off leash, highly supervised play when appropriate and critical confidence building and exposure activities to novel stimuli. Plus, touch and handling work, veterinary visit prep, nutrition, and preventative measures on common puppy struggles. Our goal is to help you and your puppy get started on the right paw! And to help you develop a well- rounded, confident, happy dog! Come join us to help begin your journey to a well behaved, happy dog!
Level 1 ~ Beginner
Beginner Obedience is for dogs 19 weeks and older that are just starting to learn basic manners and obedience skills. For dogs 18 weeks or younger, please join our Puppy Class. We will cover sit, down, stay, come, drop it, leave it, no pulling on leash, stand, focus work, mat work and much more. In addition, we cover many problem behaviors like jumping, mouthing, stealing, and many other nuisance behaviors. The first class, or "The Human Training", is a 2-hour class that is followed up by 5-weeks of 1-hour classes with the dogs.
Level 3 ~ Advanced
Intermediate obedience (level 2 obedience) is a 6-week course for those dogs that have either completed a beginner obedience class (at DOGSMARTZ UNLEASHED or elsewhere) or have a foundation of basic skills working in lower level distractions. This class is for those that want to improve their dog's skills working in higher level distractions, increasing duration and distance, as well to help improve skills. If your goal is to have a better-behaved dog in public, do therapy work, earn a Canine Good Citizen, or work on better manners with company, this is the class for you and your dog!
We will work on sit, down, stay, come, walking, attention, and leave-it work with much higher distractions (including outdoor work when weather allows) and A LOT of greeting work to teach your dogs to greet politely!
Level 2 ~ Intermediate
CANINE LIFE & SOCIAL SKILLS
C.L.A.S.S., or Canine Life and Social Skills, is an educational program to promote training focused on the use of positive reinforcement and to strengthen relationships between humans and their canine companions. C.L.A.S.S. is a three-level evaluation for owners to demonstrate the real-life skills of their dogs, and a knowledge assessment of the owner's understanding of basic dog handling.
Developed by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), based on input from dog owners and non-dog owners, shelter workers, and professional dog trainers, C.L.A.S.S. benefits pet owners, dogs, and everyone in the community!
The three levels of the program are named after human university degree programs: the B.A. for Dogs™ (Bachelor’s level), the M.A. for Dogs™ (Master’s level), and the Ph.D. for Dogs™ (Doctorate level). The skills in each level vary in the level of difficulty and distractions. At the B.A. level, we allow the use of treats as rewards after the completion of an exercise, and some of the “real-life” skills that are assessed are waiting at the door, drop it, and settle. In the M.A. level, dogs are asked to walk past several dogs of different sizes, breeds, and genders, to wait in the car before exiting, and to allow the student to handle various parts of their body. In the Ph.D. level, owners carry everyday objects such as a cardboard box or paper sack while walking their dogs on a loose leash, ask their dogs to back up, and have their dog demonstrate table manners during a simulated dinner session. Each level also allows for two “bonus rounds” that owners may elect to try with their dog.
Out & About
This class is for those that have either completed Advanced or Intermediate Obedience (at the recommendation of their trainer) at DOGSMARTZ UNLEASHED or advanced level obedience elsewhere. This class will be held completely off site at random locations including pet supply stores, parks, and other pet-friendly businesses to work on public manners and obedience skills in very high distraction areas. This class is held only in Spring, Summer, and early Fall.
Have fun with your dog while you are out on the town!
Advanced Obedience (level 3) is for those dogs that have completed an Intermediate class at DOGMSARTZ UNLEASHED. For dogs that have completed higher level obedience classes elsewhere, please contact us for direction of which class to take. This class takes those skills learned in our intermediate class and builds on them adding much more distraction, distance, and duration. This class includes more outdoor work, intense greeting work, and some off leash work (on safety lines indoors and outdoors). This class also focuses on reducing/eliminating treats and relying on hand cues and voice cues with praise only.
CANINE GOOD CITIZEN
THERAPY DOG PREP
AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program is designed
to show that a dog has been trained to have good manners at home and in the community. The three levels of CGC (CGC, AKC Community Canine, and AKC Urban CGC) all stress responsible pet ownership for owners and increasingly difficult levels of training and manners from the dog. Each level consists of a 10-step test, and all dogs who pass the tests may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club, one for each level passed. Each level class is a 6-week course and is open to any age or breed (full or mix). However, dogs must have completed all vaccinations and know sit, down, sit-stay, down-stay, come, and loose leash walking reliably. An obedience class and/or AKC Star class is recommended prior to any of these classes. CGC certifications show that your dog is polite in public. It is also a recognized title to place on your dog! Class includes testing in the last week of class.
Requirements for AKC Community Canine and Urban CGC:
To earn the AKC Community Canine or Urban CGC title, dogs must meet the following two requirements:
Must already have a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) award or title on record at AKC.
Must have an AKC number of one of 3 types (AKC registration number, PAL number, or AKC Canine Partners number). All dogs, including mixed breeds, can get an AKC number. The reason for the AKC number requirement is that this is how we create titles at AKC; we attach the titles to the dog's number. For more information on getting an AKC number...
RECALL ~ COME WHEN CALLED
Does your dog turn the other way when you call him/her? Or maybe they just stare at you while you frantically try to get them to come to you? Some dogs may even run the other way. If your dog has not learned how to come to you when called, this is the class for you!
Training your dog to come when called is one of the most important commands they need to be taught. If your dog is loose, they can be a danger to someone else as well as themselves. Things like traffic, loose animals, or poisonous substances can be fatal to your dog if they do not respond to you.
WALK WITH ME
This class is for those that want to teach their dogs to walk nicely with them and not pull. This 4-week class is open to any dog of any age. The class will be held mainly outdoors at different locations and is ALL walking work. We will teach your dogs to walk nicely next to you and to stop pulling. So, be prepared to walk!
Weather may cause a class to be canceled. So, this 4-week class may take longer to complete if the weather impedes us.
Our Therapy Dog Prep Course is 8-weeks long and prepares you and your dog for therapy testing and therapy work. If you have considered therapy work, this is the class to take to learn the ins and outs of dog therapy work. In this course, we will cover the appropriate skills needed for therapy work. We practice skills such as learning how to have your dog approach wheelchairs, room visits. We will be acclimating your dog to the common noises and objects that surround them in this work. We also teach you how to deal with some common challenges that you can be faced with. In addition, we cover the policies and regulations to protect you and your dog and help prepare you for the test. You and your dog will get real life practice for the last two weeks of this class. Therapy work is one of the most rewarding experiences; however, preparing you and your dog to handle the challenges in advance can make all the difference in creating a successful Therapy Dog Team.
Dogs must be 1-year or older and have completed Intermediate Obedience Class before taking the Therapy Dog Prep Course.
The first class is a 2-hour class that is just for humans (The Human Training). The remaining 7-weeks are with dogs, 1 hour per class.
